WSOP Circuit Coming to South Africa
The World Series of Poker Circuit will make its first appearance on the African continent when the Emerald Resort and Casino near Johannesburg hosts the no-limit Texas Holdem event on 24 October. The tournament will feature 500 players, each paying US$5,000 to enter. The prize pool is expected to be nearly US$2.5 million with a top prize of US$500,000.

Obrestad Signs with Full Tilt Poker
Annette Obrestad, the 2007 World Series of Poker Europe Main Event champion, has singed an endorsement contract with major online poker site Full Tilt Poker. She joins 1996 WSOP Main Event winner Huckleberry Seed and 2000 champion Chris “Jesus” Ferguson, as well as a host of other poker pros, in endorsing the site.

Wynn May Move HQ from Vegas to Macau
In an interview designed to promote the opening of the new Encore Macau casino resort, Wynn Resorts CEO Steve Wynn said that he would consider moving his company headquarters from Las Vegas to the Chinese territory. He also said that he would look at establishing a third mega-resort in the fast-growing gambling mecca.

After recently settling with the state of Missouri over a casino license issue, Pinnacle Entertainment announced that it was canceling plans to expand its L’Auberge du Lac casino complex near Lake Charles, Louisiana. Players arrested under the law could have faced a $25,000 fine or up to two years in state prison. After meetings with industry groups and members of the Poker Players Alliance, Speaker DeLeo amended the bill to remove the line criminalizing internet gambling.

A meeting of the Financial Services Committee of the US House of Representatives concerning new online gaming legislation was postponed from its scheduled date of 16 April. Committee members organized the hearing to discuss new proposals put forth by Congressman Barney Frank, a longtime proponent of legalizing internet gambling in the US, on regulating and taxing online gaming revenues. The committee has yet to announce a new date for the hearing.

Police in Fairfax County, Virginia, arrested six men in connection with two home invasion robberies of high-stakes private poker games. The robbers stole several thousand dollars’ worth of cash, credit cards, watches and jewelry in two heists last month, the first on 12 March and the second on 22 March. A police spokeswoman said that the home games might have been pre-selected as targets due to their high visibility and the large amount of cash available at the tables.

State Assembly Speaker Robert DeLeo announced the details of his bill to bring casino gambling to Massachusetts. The plans call for two land-based casinos, each paying license fees of US$100 million, and four slot machine parlors, with each paying US$15 million in licensing fees. Estimates from Mr. DeLeo and other state assemblymen project that the projects will create six thousand construction jobs and up to seven thousand new permanent jobs.

The troubled President Casino in St. Louis, Missouri, has encountered even more difficulties in recent days. Rising floodwaters on the Mississippi River have inundated the casino and its riverfront location.
The casino announced through its website that it would be temporarily closed while workers try to drain the water and repair the interior. The casino is slated to close 1 July after pressure from state gaming officials and decreased revenues.

A penny slot machine at the Fortune Valley Hotel and Casino in Colorado awarded visitor Louise Chavez a huge US$42 million jackpot – or so she thought. Ms. Chavez, a resident of nearby Thornton, saw that her machine displayed a message that she had won the nationwide progressive jackpot, one of the biggest in Colorado history. Casino officials later told her that the machine displayed a faulty message and that the highest jackpot they could award was US$250,000.
